Lesson 2 : Novelty, Creativity, Innovation and Invention

(Reflection on Lesson Learned)
In this week, lecturer talk about novelty, creativity, innovation and invention.

Creativity means create something new which has value in it. We can have a lot of new ideas everyday, but it depends on the amount of value that the idea carry. But how we measure the value of some particular new ideas? Then we need to take a look at the interaction between that person and the society. When a idea can be accept by the society and everyone can make use of it, then it is a creativity in capital "C". This kind of big C idea could affects the society and culture. For those ideas which just fulfill that person needs, is known as small "c" creativity. So when we want to think of a new and creative idea, we need to make sure that it has values in it.

Innovation means a process of making they creative idea into more practical. We can also said that innovation is a step after the creativity. When a new idea appear, we need to innovate about it. Analyse, select, develop and then commercialize it. Innovation is like make changes on the existing idea or upgrade those ideas into a even better one. So basically, an idea improve and improve in the process of innovation.

Novelty is classified into two types. Objective novelty and Subjective novelty. Objective novelty means the perception of an idea being new to a person or a group of people. Subjective novelty means is something that new for all the people. Perception of what is new is quite dependent. Maybe someone felt that it is new, but some other guys did not felt that. So, something new may become old for someone, and then something old maybe a new for another one. Conclusion, novelty can not take for granted.
