Lesson 1 : Creative Image of My Friend

This is the picture i had drew to describe my friend...

Yes! My friend is a human being, not a chair.
The reason I draw him into a chair, simply because of a story.
One day, a young man name Kah Hong was playing computer game happily in his room. Suddenly, a loud bang came out from his room. The sound is like something heavy smashed to the floor. No,he didn't smashed his chair on the floor. He broke his chair while he sitting on it. The chair and the human both dropped on the floor.

So that's why I make him into a chair. The facial expression on the chair is what i saw on that day - a surprising face. I did not draw the chair into a broken chair because I wish him would never broke chairs anymore. His MLC links = http://redfriday-mlc.blogspot.com/

Lesson 1: Defining Creativity

For lesson 1, we learned about the meaning of creativity. So our task for this time is to define creativity. Before i learned this class,i thought creative means think out something new or something unique. But it not just that.

To be creative, we need to work hard and hard and hard, not just the talent that had given. If you have the talent, but you are lazy. You cant be creative and will not achieve anything. A lot of people said that they are not creative, but it is wrong. Everyone can be creative, what we need is just practice. Creativity is something that we could learn, the more we learn, the more we practice it in daily life, the more creative we will be.

----------------------- Mozart is a creative person. But he wont achieve anything if he did not work hard. ------------------

Besides that, creative ideas are mostly not actually a NEW idea. Those ideas can be some old idea or concept that combine together and then produce a better result. The creative act is not an act of creation in the sense of the Old Testament. It does not create something out of nothing: it uncovers, selects, re-shuffles, combines, synthesizes already existing facts, ideas, faculties, skills. The more familiar the parts, the more striking the new whole.” Arthur Koestler. This explained that a "new" creative idea is actually based on those old ideas. The "new" idea is just something that sum up all other kinds of things and provide a sense of novelty.

- Creativity is an ability. Ability to think off something new base on those existing concept. And this ability can be learned.

- Creativity is an attitude. Attitude to accept changes and not just keep on thinking in the old way. Keep on thinking in the old way will not developed any improvement and create new way.

- Creativity is a process. Process to make up something new. A new idea need a long and hard process. It wont just pop up suddenly.

Creativity is the ability to think up and design new inventions, produce works of art, solve problems in new ways, or develop an idea based on an original, novel, or unconventional approach.
(quote from MLC Lesson 1 slide)

Creative idea happened in unexpected environment. Maybe this fish can think off some creative ideas inside this bulb, instead of in the aquarium...

Lesson 1 - What I Had Learned in Class?

Before I start to say about my own reflection, I would like to share this video first.

This is the video that showed by the lecturer in class. It’s about someone that came up with a challenging game called “Marshmallow Challenge”. And the video is basically about the result and analysis of the challenge.
For more info, click http://www.marshmallowchallenge.com/Welcome.html

Through this video, I had learned that sometimes we need to take risk in doing something. But then the result is “ta-da” or “oh-oh” make it kind of risky. But then, if we not even try to take the risk, how we know that the result is “ta-da” or “oh-oh”. A “ta-da” result for sure is great, but an “oh-oh” result is better than we are not trying it. Just like those business students, when they are running out of time, they take the risk to put the marshmallow. It might get an “oh-oh” result, but that does not mean they gained nothing. That “oh-oh” result make them learn that this method is not working. Besides that, we can also solve things in the kindergarten schools’ students way – the prototype way. By using it, we could always know the result and feedback instantly. It was like trial and error.

Keep on trying until we could get the result, and not just keep on stick to one single plan. We should try different and various ways when solving problems. Just like when making a design, idea development is important. Develop the idea and slowly improve n come out with another new idea. The first plan is not always the best so do the first design idea.

Besides that, Tom Wujec is a creative person. He not just came up with an exciting game. But that game had lots of meaning in it. Through this game, it could encourage teams to experience simple but profound lessons in collaboration, innovation and creativity. That means this game not just needs collaboration, it needs creativity to “play” it and make it a success. If we make this game as a business, a project or something else. Then this explain that everything need to be creative to solve it.

Lesson 0 : Introduction to Creative Studies

At first...I thought that "Creative Studies" is an English Language subject. Why? Because our foundation English lecturer told us that we still going to learn English in degree and that subject is called "Creative Studies". But then when i check in MMLS, i saw that the lecturers who teaching this particular subject are Yap Sau Bin, RadziBedu and Musttafa Muzer. Ain't these lecturers that taught me Media Appreciation and Media Culture in alpha year? How come they are teaching English?

So I was quite blur when I first attend the class. But when Mr. Yap Sau Bin showed the slide, objective of this subject. (To introduce and provide aspects of thinking methods and creativity, in encountering and solving problems) Yeah, great! I know that I'm not in English class.

------------------------This is what i felt when i know that I'm not in English class---------------------------------------

Creative Studies, so we are going to study about creative and creativity. I hope that this class could make me to be more creative. As I'm studying in FCM, I really need those "creative". I felt that I am not creative and so I wish that this class will give me some "creative juice". I hope that this class will teach me how to be creative in solving problems. And with the creativity I had learned, I could use it in doing my assignments or even in daily life.
