Lesson 7 : Random Word/Image Association

Random Association is a way to generate idea through a fixed formula. The main thing of random association is to use a random word to make the brain think out a new idea. This method is very good in generate new idea and it is very easy to use too. When our brain'd been given a random word, it will start to think something that different from what we always think. It's like out of context. Almost any random word give to the brain, and the brain will create a new idea. Just like the exercise below, we'd been given a problem and a random word. The problem could be solve simply because of the random word.

I found that Random Association is really good and I might want to try to use it on my assignment one day. The random word might sound nonsense but it is really work. And the idea we get will mostly special and unique. Let's get random!

Lesson 7: Class Exercise - Random Association Exercise

Situation/Problem:
To create "SCARY IMAGES/OBJECT" that will instill fear among people through out the age.

Random Words :
Kitten

Association:
1) Glowing eyes: A sudden glowing eyes appear in dark is scary.
In practice :
The image with two eyes which is glowing and have the feeling of fierce in the dark.

Association:
2)Chase mouse: Kitten like chase mouse and kill them.
In practice:
Make the image very realistic with a scary ghost like want to chase out from the picture.

Association:
3)Like fish: Kitten eat fish.
In practice:
A image of a scary zombie eating human flesh with blood all over the image.

Association:
4) Fury : Fury can make people feel itchy.
In practice :
A object that full of tiny tiny fur that could make people itchy, people fear of it not because the object is fierce or disgusting, just because people scare to be tickle.

I choose the fury object to illustrate it. As I think it could really scared people through out the age. And this idea is very different with the other 3 and it is the best one. This fury object could really scare me as i scare to be tickle too. There are a lot people who scare to be tickle in this world, I bet that this SCARY object could really scare people out.

Lesson 7: A Local Design Artist (Sharing)

This week, my Digital Imaging Art lecturer had invited a local artist to my class to demo us how to use tablet for digital painting. His name is Mohd Roshfaizal Ariffin aka Rosh. He is currently leading creative team in Chain-Fx, a visual effects studio in Malaysia. http://www.chain-fx.com/

He is very creative in design and his digital painting skill is good.
This is his portfolio website,http://www.roshfaizal.net/index02.html
I will show some of his works here.

Isn't it nice? I wish I could paint like him and he inspired me.

Lesson 6 : Class Exercise - Juxtaposition 2

In this week, we had did some exercise in class.
1st, lecturer give us 20 words which is separate in 2 groups.
Then we got 2 choose 3 pairs of number.
The number I choose is 88,21,10
So my words are
1) oil,wood
2) lightning,water
3)flower,head

With this 3 words,I got to make a sentence to link them.
The sentence( see the image below)

After that, we got to visualize the sentence with images.

Then we got to combine the 2 separated words from each one of it, and make a image which explain the word.
1) oilwood
2)lightningwater
3)flowerhead

Analogy Exercise

Poem 1
Love
Love is like red color and green color on the chili,
it combined perfectly.
Not everyone like chili due to it's spicy,
but i love you just like i love to eat chili.

Life
Life is short like candle burned,
appreciate life since it's worth.
Make your life shine in this world,
as the candle glow in the blur.

Happiness
Happiness is like the numbers on the clock,
it's as simple as one to twelve.
It get complicated as we add in hours, minutes and seconds,
but if we mange it well, we will get the grand.

Woman
Woman is like a little goldfish with big shark fin,
they look pretty but they could be crazy.
Once they get mad,
you will get faint.

Lesson 6 : Cool Photos and Artworks for Your Inspiration (Sharing)

This post is part of our weekly series: showing some interesting Photos and Artworks around the Web so you can get inspiration for your design. If you want to share your great Photos or Artworks with our readers, just send them over via email with image source link using “Weekly Photos and Artworks Inspiration” in the subject. Enjoy the post.

Yes! Something to give us inspiration. I like to view all these as my precedent studies for my assignment. I could learn something from it and get my new ideas...

Lesson 5 : Juxtaposition

Juxtaposition means by placing two tings/variables next to each other, and then it create a feel of contrast or similarity through comparison. When two things put to each other, we will automatically start to compare, when we comparing something, then another thing will "pop out".

Juxtaposition (literally) means contrast, both of the things that put together are opposed with another.

Example :
1) She want to get slim, but she still eat a lot.
2) We are not allowed to rear pets in the hostel, but my friend has a parrot in his room.

Juxtaposition is always used in the drama or movie in order to develop the storyline and make it interesting.

So juxtaposition can be used in developing a new idea.

Lesson 5 : Cool Fineliner Illustrations from Andrea Preis (Sharing)

Andreas Preis is a Germany based artist, working as a graphic designer, a VJ, DJ and part of the Elektropastete collective. He usually illustrates using fineliners, markers, pencils and some brushes, and gives the pictures a little more contrast to get a stronger Black/White effect. We have list here some of his colored works. You can visit his website for more and also the original Black & White pictures.

Andrea Preis had his own style of drawing and design. It's more in urban style, I guess that's why he is a DJ also. Every artist should had their own style when creating artworks, which could make it unique and thus it would be creative.

Lesson 4: Associated Mind Map

Last week, I had learned about logical mind map. So this week I'd learn associated mind map. Associated mind map is very different from logical mind map. Logical mind map, as the name said it, it's logical. So we maybe could said that associated mind map is not logic. These often cause that the words that think from associated mind map is very special. It maybe very unreasonable. But then those words can be connected in the other way round and it might make it very creative and new. So associated mind map is also another good technique to solve a problem. Think out of the box!

Think about things that all over the world.

Lesson 4: Class Exercise - Mortar & Pestle

In the class, we are given a associated mind map and we had to choose 5 random words to make it related to mortar and pestle.
The words i choose is exercise, death, hair,$$$,power.
Below is my works...

Lesson 4 : The Adopt a Bot Project (Sharing)

Designer Brian Marshall showed great interest in building things during his childhood. At that time, building toys like Legos and Lincoln Logs occupied most of his spare time. As time goes by, he wasn’t satisfied with the simple toy game any more and began searching for new and unusual materials to allow his imagination run wild. Till one day, a unique lamp in a movie inspired him, and thus destined his art.

Marshall then began using found objects to assemble little lovely robots. Anything he found, even broken clocks, cameras, oil cans and cutlery, makes contribution to his creations. All the little robots are residing in Marshall’s robot orphanage for his adopt-a-bot project.

I still remembered when I am small. I use to make my own toy with paper or other stuffs too. But not as nice as Brian Marshall's product. DIY something is fun and it can train our brain to be more creative in solving problems. I had 1 assignment in alpha year which had to use recycle things to produce a lamp.

It's not something very impressive, but I having fun in the process of making it.

Lesson 3 : Method of Creative Thinking

There are two method of creative thinking, which are divergent thinking and convergent thinking. We can said that this two method is followed by this order - divergent and then convergent. Most of the people are better on one of the method but not both.

Divergent thinking: is a process to think of a lot of possible ideas on a particular topic. It involves in brainstorming, getting all the ways to solve a problem in a short time period. All related ideas will be generate in order to solve the problem. So the shape will be in divergent, all the ideas going outside.

Convergent thinking : is the opposite of divergent thinking. It collects all the ideas from divergent thinking and make into one best solution to the particular problem.

The following picture could explain mroe on this 2 thinking methods

MIND MAPPING
Is a great way to generate ideas and used in brainstorming. It is now greatly used in this society and even to me in doing my assignments. There are basically two techniques of mind mapping, which are logical mind map and associated mind map.

Logical Mind Map : We can said that logical mind map is a kind of stereotype. All the words are easy to think by others people because of the stereotype. Those words are very direct to the topic and is very common to the society. But this technique is very good for categorizing a lot of informations.
example of mind map

Associated Mind Map : This is the opposite of logical mind map. It could generate random ideas and words. All those words are not directly related to the subject. But it is mostly very unique and creative.

Stereotype : Is an image that the public think of it to a group of people. Example, beautiful women are not smart. This stereotype is often created by the media. Most of the time, stereotypes are bad image of a particular group. But there are also cases of good stereotype, like nurse are caring.

Lesson 3 : Handmade Wooden Typographic Puzzle - Nuzzles (Sharing)

John Christenson earned a B.F.A. in graphic design and a B.F.A. in industrial design from the University of Illinois at Chicago. He has been a senior graphic designer since 2001, which helps a lot to his Nuzzles. Nuzzles are custom designed handmade wooden name puzzles, each with its own unique typographic style. Every puzzle is crafted from a single block of wood, and the letterforms interlock with each other in a way that creates a sense of harmony and integrity. We have listed some of John’s Nuzzles as follow, let’s have a look at the smart wood art.

from:

This is like an evolution of puzzle. But it's in typo form. It's very creative because it is different from the usual puzzle which is Flat. This Nuzzles is 3D. It would be a nice decorative item to displace in our house.
